Evonik expands capacities for extruded PLEXIGLAS® sheets with an abrasion-resistant coating in Weiterstadt
Darmstadt, Germany, October 11, 2010
  • New extrusion line with annual capacity of 10,000 tons
  • Simultaneous startup of a abrasion-resistant coating line
The Evonik Acrylic Polymers Business Line is about to expand capacity for extruded PLEXIGLAS® sheets at its Weiterstadt site through investments totaling some EUR 8 million. The new extrusion line has an annual capacity of 10,000 tons. At the same time, a new line for abrasion-resistant coating is being installed. Both modules are scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011.

This combination of extrusion and coating lines and a specially developed coating enables production of abrasion-resistant coated sheets with thicknesses between 1.5 to 16 millimeters. The special PLEXIGLAS® grades are used in all applications with stringent demands for robust, abrasion-resistant surfaces. These include furniture making and interior design, store fixtures, safety glazing for machines and equipment, and display technology. Initial sample sheets from trial production runs met with lively interest in the market.

“With these investments to produce high-quality PLEXIGLAS® sheets with an abrasion-resistant coating, we are once again focusing on specialty products, which helps us tap into additional markets and gain new customers,” says Michael Träxler, Senior Vice President of the Acrylic Polymers Business Line.
