ISP Pharmaceuticals today announced new equipment at its Sao Paulo laboratory will be used to develop pharmaceutical pellets and evaluate excipient and coatings in pharmaceutical pellets prepared by extrusion spheronization. The all-new lab-scale extruder and multi-bowl spheronizer will be made available to ISP customers focused on developing modified-release forms using extrusion spheronization. ISP Pharmaceuticals is a supplier of Advantia® Performance coatings systems used for enteric coating of pellets and a leading supplier of polymers that show significant potential in the preparation of pharmaceutical pellets. According to Dr. Stuart Porter, Sr. Director Global Pharma Applications R&D, the new equipment at Sao Paulo complements processing equipment in place at other ISP laboratories in the United States and India. “Using multi-particulates as a way to formulate reliable and consistent modified-release dosage forms is of increasing interest in the pharmaceutical industry,” he said. “ISP is installing new equipment in order to work with our customers to fine-tune pellet formulations in a lab-scale environment. With the equipment in place and significant expertise in coating systems and polymer technologies, we are well equipped to provide on-the-spot technical service and support to formulators in Brazil and other regions of the world working on pellet formulation and enteric-release projects.” The Essence of Collaboration According to Sandra Soares, Pharmaceutical Marketing Director, Latin America, pharmaceutical formulation scientists in Brazil place a high value on project support services. “Here in Brazil pharmaceutical formulation scientists welcome technical support services that ultimately lead to robust solid dosage forms,” she said. “Adding new equipment at our Sao Paulo laboratory positions ISP Pharmaceuticals as a major supporter of multiple types of oral solid dosage forms that meet the specific needs of pharmaceutical companies in the region.” ISP offers Advantia® Performance coating systems for one-step, delayed (enteric)-release applications. In addition, ISP supplies Plasdone® polymers and Polyplasdone® polymers as binders, disintegrants and processing aids.
