Shanghai, China – December 18, 2009 – BASF Coatings, the
coatings division of BASF, today announced the launch of NORBINTM,
its first decorative paints brand for the China market in response to its
growing demand for environmentally friendly products.

NORBINTM is developed locally for the China market, where
environmentally friendliness, weather resistance, dirt pick-up
resistance, washability, high color fastness are important criteria for
decorative paints.  Backed by BASF  Coatings’ rich R&D resources,
NORBINTM is poised to be a pioneer in the coatings industry to supply
the market with products that meet the needs of green buildings in
China.

The NORBINTM series includes products that have no detectable*
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Minimizing VOCs is important to
safeguard the health of painters, tenants and households. Its favorable
combination of properties provides a unique opportunity for developers,
architects and contractors to have a solution tailored to their needs for
both interior and exterior paints used in industrial, residential as well as
commercial buildings.

“With rapidly improving living standards and growing environmental
awareness among consumers, China’s building and construction
industry increasingly demands the  most advanced solutions for high
performance, safety for painters and end users, durability, easy
application and visual attraction,” said Mr. Markus Burri, Group Vice
President of BASF’s Coatings Division, Asia Pacific. “We are confident
about the potential of eco-efficient coatings products in this market and
BASF Coatings’ R&D resources are committed to bringing the latest
coatings technology to cater to China’s needs.”
Developed and produced in China for China, NORBINTM rides on BASF
Coatings’ most advanced portfolio of coatings technologies, the
company’s long standing experience in coatings products and solutions,
as well as its breadth of knowledge on sustainable construction solutions
worldwide.

BASF began China production of NORBIN™ in 2009, and has
established a R&D Center in Shanghai’s Caohejing High-Tech Park.
This R&D Center joins forces with BASF Coatings’ global coatings R&D
network to provide tailored solutions for the China market. They have
been working on advanced mechanism of coating film forming to get
better product performance, including dirt pick-up resistance and acid-
rain resistance.  Meanwhile BASF Coatings innovated products that use
single-coat concept during application  to get excellent hiding power of
coating film. The R&D Center is  also developing some functional
products, such as heat reflective coatings, to enhance energy efficiency
in the construction industry in China.
“While BASF Coatings has long provided high quality materials and
solutions for the coatings industry in China, the launch of NORBINTM and
its local production in China provided a fast track for Chinese end users
to benefit from BASF Coatings’ advanced coatings solutions tailored for
sustainable construction,’’ said Mr. Johnny Kwan, Chairman of BASF
Greater China Country Board. “Under BASF’s newly announced
Strategy 2020 for Asia Pacific region, we will strengthen our focus in key
growth industries. We are committed  to be a reliable long-term partner
for China’s construction industry by providing our most advanced
products and solutions,” he added.
As the world’s leading chemical company, BASF develops, produces
and markets a high-quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings,
automotive refinishes and industrial coatings as well as decorative paints.
BASF has significant market positions  in the coatings sector in Europe,
North America, South America and the Asia/Pacific region.  In 2008,
BASF Coatings, the Coatings Division of the BASF Group, achieved
global sales of almost 2.5 billion Euros.
