First implantation of resorbable antibacterial envelope announced

The first ever implantation of a fully resorbable antibacterial envelope has taken place to help ensure surgery patients are at a lower risk of infection.
According to TYRX, the AIGISRx R antibacterial envelope is designed to stabilise electronic implantable devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
As well as this, the antibacterial envelope releases the antimicrobial agents rifampin and minocycline to help protect against microbial colonisation of the device during surgical implantation.
Cardiac electrophysiologist at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute Dr Francois Philippon said: "I found implantation of the fully resorbable envelope to be very straightforward and believe that the combination of stabilisation and locally delivered antibiotics provided by the product will be of great potential benefit to our patients."
Indeed, Dr Philippon claims surgical site infections are on the increase and can cause patients to spend more time in hospital as they get treatment for the infection, which also puts them at greater risk of fatality.
