Speaker’s Roundtable to Address Transition From Batch Operations to Continuous Operations

ISP, a major supplier of ingredients and development services to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, today announced Dr. Stuart Porter, Senior Director, Global Pharmaceutical Applications R&D, will participate in a distinguished panel at ExcipientFest Americas on the subject of continuous manufacturing. Continuous manufacturing has become an area of increasing importance within the pharmaceutical industry as producers of pharmaceuticals consider how to best increase manufacturing efficiencies and achieve operational excellence, while maintaining high quality standards and product performance. Included in the roundtable discussion called “Pharmaceutical Continuous Manufacturing: Challenges in Going Back to the Future” is Steven Wolfgang, Data Analysis Team Leader of the Office of Compliance at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER); Mark Neidlinger, Process Engineering Manager at GEA Process Engineering Inc.; Dr. Chris Moreton of FinnBrit Consulting; and Dr. Brett Alexander, Senior Scientist at AstraZeneca. Attendees of ExcipientFest Americas may participate in the roundtable discussion, moderated by Angie Drakulich, Managing Editor of Pharmaceutical Technology magazine, beginning 4:15 PM, Tuesday, May 10, Baltimore Ballroom of the Renaissance Harborplace.

According to Dr. Porter, the roundtable discussion is conceived as a forum to help the pharmaceutical producing industries transition successfully from batch to continuous production processes. “As the pharmaceutical industry seeks to capture some of the operational efficiencies of continuous processing, new approaches are required with respect to the utilization of equipment, excipients and regulatory practices,” he said. “During the roundtable discussion, we will ask experts in all of these areas to share their vision that may, one day soon, lead our industry to wide-scale use of continuous processing.”

Continuous Coatings Processes

ISP offers Advantia® Preferred HS a unique high solids coating system that is ideally suited for making the transition from batch to continuous coatings processes.  Last year, ISP announced that it will dedicate R&D resources to further the advancement of high solids film-coatings utilized in continuous process manufacturing of pharmaceutical tablets. Focusing, inter alia, on Advantia Preferred HS high solids coatings systems, which have the benefit of enabling the appropriate amount of coating to be deposited during the short “dwell time” experienced in continuous coating operations, coupled with low suspension viscosity (which enables relatively low atomizing conditions to be used, thus preventing excessive tablet bed perturbation, a condition that can be counterproductive in achieving good coating uniformity in continuous processes), research efforts will seek to explore the full capabilities of continuous coating processes within the context of continuous, in-line manufacturing processes.
